A hospital stay affords access to lifesaving surgical skills, and treatment for injury and acute illness such as organ failure and serious infection. Your body’s systems can be monitored constantly for vital function, giving care providers actionable information to save your life and help you heal. The technology and human resource required to provide hospital care in our healthcare system is very expensive and as such, the hospital is not an appropriate place for long term treatment or therapy after stability has been achieved. However, many hospitals have highly skilled outpatient services such as wound care that work in coordination with home health care or skilled nursing facilities. At your provider’s direction, a hospital based wound care team can provide training and oversight to a long term facility or home health staff for treatment of skin ulcers or other issues that require skill and close attention. Periodic inpatient visits can be available without hospital admittance.
